For our 1st blog discussion, I'd like you to recall what we talked about in our last class, reflectly upon the iceberg concept of culture. You must think "deeply" about culture and go beyond the surface of what we know and see. There is a deeper section below the water that makes up larger aspects of "culture".
For your response to our 1st discussion: Please tell us some DEEP examples or observations of what is similar and what is different between your culture and US culture. (This is really 2 questions: "What is similar?" AND "What is different?") For example, you may want to focus on a particular behavior, and explain the reasons why or describe exactly how the behavior is similar or different.

ReplyDeleteAs I am taking this class, I became knowing what the differences are between the location and the customs of many countries. I realized that the Japaneses, the Chineses and we, Koreans have some differences. For example, the Chineses and the Japeneses only use the fork but the Koreans also use the spoon. In addition the Japaneses and the Koreans have slept on the floor but the Chineses always sleep on the bed because their sleeping custom have developed a lot .Since a lot of countries have diffenrent customs, we should try to understand each other. Thank you for your time to read my writing . ^^
ReplyDeleteWhat is similar and what is different between your culture and US culture.
ReplyDeleteFirst, similar thing is hard to finding. That is relation of pet. My culture and US culture are same to their pet. Pet get hurt or ill then we are also sad. If that pet die, then they are also crying or feel sorrow. They loved their pet. So many people have all different culture. But mentality is almost same for someone. And give to love are always sublime thing all of the world.
Second, different thing is so many. But I choose one thing. My culture(but some people is Not) is almost avoid other's eyes. So many peoples go through same place, useing same tools. some of one is perhaps meeting daily. But they don't know. They are just avoid each other. Then US peoples is different. They don't avoid their eyes. If I go into the Russell Union. That I look at the man get out there. He will aviod my eyes in case of my culture. He look at me and smile or say "Hi" in case of US culture. This thing feels to me they are kind and soft.
Food is not deep part of culture, but I always interest in foon.I want to understand the different culture by delicious food. This is a easy way for me to focus one thing.
ReplyDeleteBody language, sense of self,........There are so boring.
Jimmy
I think lifestyle is so different.
ReplyDeleteWe take off shoes in a house, but American doesn’t take off their shoes. And some Korean sleeps on the floor, but American never do that. In addition almost American student have a party, and make a noise in their apartment or house, but it is impolite in Korea. And food also has a lot of different things. Korean rice is very sticky, but American rice is not. And American doesn't eat fish which has a blue in the back, like a mackerel, but most Korean like this.
I think similar point is love. We have different culture like a food, language, clothes...but love is the same. Everyone love their famiy, friend and other people. I think emotions are always the same.
ReplyDeleteActually, if I compare Vietnamese culture with Ameriacn culture, it have a lot of things to say. Just saying simply, there is the simmilar that I can find is " patriotic" and the different is "individualism vs kinship". For example, American join in the army with the purpose is protect their country, they do everything; they practice hard and also
ReplyDeletesacrifice themselves for their country, and all Vietnamese also do the same. Here is some different:
+ Vietnamese language is very different from English; verbs don't change forms, articles aren't used, nouns don't have plural endings, there are no prefixes, no suffixes,..
+ Women don't shake hands with each other or with men, but Americans do it, they also give a slightly kiss on the face when they meet each other.
+ When Vietnamese people invite a friend to go out, the bill is paid for by the person offering the invitation.
....
I think that American says Yes or No clearly, but we often give a vague answer in Japan. This is different point between America and Japan. We can understand feelings of talker without saying anything. We think about feelings of others by face, tone of voice and behavior, sometimes we don't need any words. We can understand each other. I can't say Yes or No clearly.
ReplyDeleteSimilarity is wasting of stuff like water, food and energy. We don't save things too much. We have to do it voluntarily.
One of the biggest difference between U.S culture and Korean (Asian) culture is eye contacting. Americans make a eye contact when they are talking but Korean are not. We do not make a eye contact like american. they feel offensive when their friends don't make eye contact. However think making eye contact is rude when the older people talking. We express respect by not making eye contact.
ReplyDeleteAlso, between friends we don't have to make eye contact continueously. I feel a little hard because some american missunderstand me because of eye contact.
we all are different all over the world , so we have to handle it or accept our differences. the aim of this comment it's to tell you what is different between my culture(gabonis) and the usa culture; then what are the similarities.
ReplyDeletethe first difference who choke me is the lack of education of american kids or teenagers . For exemple i saw a couple american kids or teens answer to their parents using some bad word that's not respectfull you will never see that in my contry. children need to be educate even if we have to swipe them some time... moreover american people doesn't realy know a lot about geography whereas students from other contries do... i mean it's like they just think about america and nothing elss that's a bit sad . one other choking differentce is that in my country people don't work on sunday.
exept that there is more and more similarities between my country and usa: young people wear the same close ,it almost the same food , listen the same music etc...that could be explen by communication and media power because when you whatch television or you go to see a movie 80% of what you going to see is an american product. that's why on this aspect of culture i din't see a lot of differents. but off course we still have our own dialect dance food... it's just like a kind of mix we add the american culture and even more french culture....
i think that's the way people should start to do things. don't forget where you come from but discover other cultur don't be narrow-minded.life is to short for that.
Food is different between U.S culture and korea culture. I think, american people would like to junk food and greasy food. People can eat junk food everywhere. It is not good for a health. SO many people are fat. In contrast, korean people always eat a lot of vegetables. So most people are slim. When I came here first , I could not eat much because food is very greasy and sweet. I am concernded about that. I think, people should consider their health when they eat food.
ReplyDeleteThis is a very interesting picture that shows us various aspect of our personality. It shows us that everybody in this world has a personality that shows, and one that's invisible for everybody else but us. It's by our actions that people can see the showing part of the iceberg, but our ideals, our beliefs are the one part that doesn't show, the part that stays underwater. This part is known by the persons that are close to you, like your friends and family. When people know that part of your personality, you can tell they are interested in your life and your being. But when somebody only knows the showing part of your iceberg, this means that you haven't open up your personality to that person and that you’re not really into that person or that he isn't one of your close friends. I think it’s better not to show our personality, because if everybody knew what you really were, you could become a victim for others, and every persons that would want to hurt you, would already know what to say or to do to be above of your tolerance. To stay protected, you should keep the hidden part of yourself steeled in obscurity. And that is what I think that picture tries to show us.
